Poetry: D. H. Lawrence
[Withdrawn, not available for performance.]
Composer’s notes: This work’s title comes from the opening words of D. H. Lawrence’s poem “The Ship of Death,” a poem written in the final months of his life. A few years after composing this work my view of the world changed, and after that I no longer found Lawrence’s poem convincing, either in style or premise. When I realized that my feelings toward the poem had changed, I withdrew the work. A few reworked fragments of the music have been used in later works.
