Shinn and Mark Medoff completed work on a reconceived and restructured libretto for their opera Sara McKinnon. Shinn began work on the music, 2009.

Retired as Professor Emeritus from Arizona State University to compose full time, May, 2006.

Song cycle If Soul May Look, on poems by William Butler Yeats, premiered October 25, 2004 by Kristin Dauphinais and Andrew Campbell in Katzin Concert Hall, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona.

Beautiful Princess Available for Rescue, a full-length fantasy opera (libretto by Shinn), premiered February 27, 28, and 29, 2004 by Doña Lyric Opera, Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Sara McKinnon, (libretto by Mark Medoff) was premiered in a revised version by the University of Colorado Opera April 24-27, 2003.
